The cuisine was incredible as usual, highlighted by a shift back to DSD Delicatessen and the cevapcici (allegedly) using Jovans grandfathers recipe from the Old Country DSD recently reopened after a 10+ year closure and relocation of their original location on Lawrence Ave (immortalized in our Fire & Ice Documentaries from 2003 and 2004). After speaking with the new owner, the son of the previous locations owner, DSD now uses only premium meats in their offerings and the result was noticeable! I absolutely anticipate DSD once again being the Deli of choice for our annual gathering! We also stepped up our game on breakfasts this year. Jimmy Dean continued to make an appearance Saturday & Sunday, but this time was accompanied by bacon, pancakes and cinnamon rolls, all prepared over fire. It was an impressive spread and a great way to start each day!
2021 also marked the return of the 17 year cicada! Many of us remember them vividly from 2004 (which again, was clearly evident in the 2004 Fire & Ice documentary video). While the noise wasnt quite as deafening this year, cicadas were everywhere! Crazy Dan challenged the kids to collect as many as possible in red solo cups and on Saturday afternoon, he crisped them up on a pan and covered them with melted chocolate for a protein heavy snack. More people than you might imagine indulged, including several of the kids! This, no doubt, will be a memorable moment for many of them!
Bags continued to be a popular activity In fact, it really saw somewhat of a resurgence with consistent play all weekend, including a nice tournament after dark in the shelter, reminiscent of TR Past. This can probably be attributed to the kids getting a little older and more self-sufficient. To be honest, some of the older kids ended up not only stepping in to participate in a few games, but they made them pretty darn competitive! Great to see them honing some serious life skills at TR!
We missed the return of CR & Bethany who unfortunately had to back out last minute due to a personal matter involving their dog Kingston, a multiple-time attendee himself. TR 2021 marked CRs 20th anniversary of his first trip to Serb Fest, the legendary TR2001, in which only a skeleton crew of Scott, Krangis and CR was able to join Crazy Dan, Deb and a crew of the elders. It was pivotal year in Serb Fests history and CR will always be recognized for being an important part of this event. TR 2021 marks just second missed Serb Fest since 2001 (the first being 2020 due to the onset of Covid 19). With this unexpected hiatus from TR, we look forward to his (and more importantly, Bethanys) return in 2022.
The rest of TR2021 was business as usual. The group retired a bit earlier than normal each night, but never felt like it compromised the quality of anyones weekend. We partied hard all day and wrapped up by midnight for the most part. With the shelter secured both Saturday and Sunday, it gave us great flexibility, especially given the weather. And each night, we were greeted with the friendliest of Rangers, asking simply that we turn off the lights whenever we were done! If only wed have been greeted with such pleasure in years past when we found ourselves out past 3am!
Carter,
