Another successful and memorable TR is in the books highlighted by lots of new faces and one surprise appearance by a Serb Fest Legend! The rain, while not as severe as anticipated, did have an impact on the weekend, most notably, resulting in high creek levels to where Sugar Valley Canoe Trips was closed the entire Memorial Day weekend. We’ve seen restrictions in place and maybe a day or two of complete closure, but to be closed for the entirety of what’s arguably one of their busiest weekends of the year says a lot about the amount of rain the area received in the days leading up to and throughout the weekend. Despite the rain, the group was well prepared to weather the storms… We conveniently had the shelter booked for both days and were even prepared with camp stoves and meals that were easily prepared without the use of our traditional TR grills. Some timely grilling of cevapcici ahead of the rain covered us during the downtime of the grills. While the beer float was missed, the group was still able to enjoy a solid hike on Saturday and many participated in ongoing, cross-generational bags competition. Lots of trash talking ensued and in most cases, players were backing it up with stellar play! After a relatively quiet year for quotes in 2023, there were several gut-laugh inducing or eyebrow raising quotes in 2024! These are always fuel for a good time and if part of the charm of the weekend. You hear things at TR that you just don’t hear in your normal day to day conversations in the real world…
Again, lots of new faces in the Serb Fest landscape this year including the Kleinhan family (Nutz & Amy recruits), Amy’s new husband Thomas and his son Evan, Yoshi, a guest of the Boskovic’s (who came in place of Crazy Dan’s precious Weber grill), and Ben Koechling, who made his first TR appearance after a standing multi-decade long invitation! The battle for Rookie of the Year was intense as anticipated. All of the new attendees should be commended for their fine integration into the group and the weekend’s festivities. That said, the Founding Members have agreed that for the first time since the award’s inception in 2003, that we’d be recognizing co-rookies of the year this year to Ben and Mick. Congratulations to both gentlemen as you both made a great impact on the weekend! Another exciting announcement and a barrier finally broken… I’m pleased to announce our first female Vince Kus Honorary Itellectual of the Year Award winner, Deb Boskovic! Take a quick glance at the TR 2024 quotes and you’ll see right away why this is a deserving honor! Thanks to Deb for the laughs! And finally congratulatorials to our Cevapcici Consumption winner, Scott Berger, who undoutedly paid the price on the backend for this acheivement....
TR2025 is sure to again be an interesting year for Serb Fest. We’ll be booking our accommodations for an epic celebration of Serb Fest in 2027, which marks the 50th Anniversary of our great Memorial Day Weekend tradition! The hype and anticipation for 2027 should and will be celebrated for the entire 2 years leading up to the anniversary. Perhaps we can even see an appearance from one of the living Legends of Serb Fest? So much to celebrate that it couldn’t possibly be contained to just one Spring.
